Finding: Racial awareness matured into bridge-building

Excerpt:
"My Black identity, once an internal truth, became a compass guiding me toward a path of unity, justice, and understanding. I felt a deepened responsibility to contribute to the community that had shaped me, to offer my story as a bridge, and to foster connections across divides."

Support:
1) The cost of bridge-work (maturity includes burden)
“How could I choose one side of my human family over another when my heart was bound to both? I couldn't simply dismiss the pain of people I had grown to love, those who felt objectified and misunderstood by the very voices I now felt compelled to carry. I wanted to be the bridge, the one who could connect them, but the cost felt overwhelming.”

2) Internalization-Commitment: expanded understanding → bridge-building
“The Internalization-Commitment phase also brings an expanded understanding of intersecting identities, allowing individuals to build bridges that connect them to both dominant and marginalized groups… By integrating Blackness into a broader social framework, individuals in this phase recognize the intricate web of their intersecting identities and pursue relationships and actions that transcend racial lines, aligning with a vision of inclusivity and solidarity.”

3) Bridge-building through multimodal adaptation (Gen Z)
“I decided to create an autoethnographic addition to this project, envisioning it as a future audio-based model with minimal writing. This approach mirrored the ways many Gen Zers interact, through visuals, audio, and AI-powered content. By adapting my work to reflect their communication style, I hoped to build a bridge of understanding that respected their generational identity and offered my story in a way that felt relevant to them.”

4) Bridge-building through authorship (book as bridge/roadmap)
“One of the most meaningful ways I chose to express my commitment to bridge-building was through writing a book that shared my journey…. I hoped my story would provide a roadmap for others, helping them see that embracing one’s identity fully doesn’t have to lead to division. Instead, it can be a foundation for building connections across cultural lines.”

“One day, we will bridge every divide, becoming one people, bound by love, as we join hands and sing those powerful words: Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”
